The study of Vytorin continues with the IMPROVE IT clinical trials http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00202878?term=IMPROVE+IT&rank=1 This "is a randomized, active-control, double-blind study of subjects with stabilized high-risk acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The primary objective is to evaluate the clinical benefit of Ezetimibe/Simvastatin Combination 10/40 (single tablet, under the brand VYTORIN in the United States) compared with Simvastatin 40 mg. Clinical benefit will be defined as the reduction in the risk of the occurrence of the composite endpoint of CV death, major coronary events, and stroke." This study will conclude in June 2012. What do you think the IMPROVE IT study will show?
#Response DateOther (please specify)
1.4/22/2008 10:03:00 PMNot sure
2.4/22/2008 10:07:00 PMIf the treat to an LDL goal, it will show benefit. If they just administer the drugs without attention to an LDL endpoint, they will fall flat again and look ridiculous.
3.4/22/2008 11:08:00 PMWhat this study will actually show is rather or not the "dogma" that lowering cholesterol is the actually mechanism by which statins work. There has been controversy since the WOSCOS and other studies that statins actually exert their effect other than by lower cholesterol. If lowering cholesterol with Zetia does not equal cardiac protection it will mean that statin's effect on primary and secondary prevention is probably by some mechanism other than cholesterol lowering.
